Christ's Return in Glory, on the Clouds of Heaven

Scriptural proof – from the Old Testament through Revelation

A Compilation by Mr. Lee Penn

Christ will return from Heaven, on the clouds, amid great glory, accompanied by a throng of angels. In so doing, He will shake the earth and the heavens. That is the consistent witness of Scripture, from the Old Testament prophets to the Gospels to the Book of Revelation. Anyone who claims to be the Christ, and does not return with the angels on the clouds of heaven, is an imposter: the False Christ.

Here's the scriptural proof, from the Old Testament prophets to the Gospels to the Epistles and the Book of Revelation. (1)

1. The Old Testament prophet Daniel saw the Son of Man coming in glory to establish an everlasting Kingdom:

Daniel 7:13-14
I beheld therefore in the vision of the night, and lo, one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and he came even to the Ancient of days: and they presented him before him. And he gave him power, and glory, and a kingdom: and all peoples, tribes and tongues shall serve him: his power is an everlasting power that shall not be taken away: and his kingdom that shall not be destroyed.

2. At the beginning of His ministry, when Jesus greeted Nathanael, he hailed Jesus as the Messiah, and Jesus responded with a prophecy of His Return:

John 1:49-51
Nathanael answered him, and said: "Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel." Jesus answered, and said to him: "Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see." And he saith to him: "Amen, amen I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."

3. After the miracle of the five loaves and the two fish, when Peter had just made his confession of faith in Christ as the Messiah and the Son of God, Christ said:

Luke 9:26
"For he that shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man shall be ashamed, when he shall come in his majesty, and that of his Father, and of the holy angels."

Parallel passage:

Matthew 16:27
"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels: and then will he render to every man according to his works"

4. On His way to Jerusalem with the disciples, Jesus taught about the events of the end of the age. The Return of Christ will be known to all, at once, wherever they may be:

Luke 17:24
"For as the lightning that lighteneth from under heaven, shineth unto the parts that are under heaven, so shall the Son of man be in his day."

Luke 17:26-37
"And as it came to pass in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat and drink, they married wives, and were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark: and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise as it came to pass, in the days of Lot: they did eat and drink, they bought and sold, they planted and built. And in the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man shall be revealed. In that hour, he that shall be on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away: and he that shall be in the field, in like manner, let him not return back. Remember Lot's wife. Whosoever shall seek to save his life, shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose it, shall preserve it. I say to you: in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together: the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left: two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left." They answering, say to him: "Where, Lord?" Who said to them: "Wheresoever the body shall be, thither will the eagles also be gathered together."

5. In Jerusalem, in sight of the Temple, several days before His Passion, Jesus taught His disciples again about the end of the age and about the manner of His return.

Christ's Return will be a sudden event that will be evident at once to everyone on earth. No propaganda will be needed; no mass media or Internet publicity will be possible:

Matthew 24:27-29
"For as lightning cometh out of the east, and appeareth even into the west: so shall the coming of the Son of man be. Wheresoever the body shall be, there shall the eagles also be gathered together. And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be moved:"

Parallel passages:

Mark 13:24-25
"But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light. And the stars of heaven shall be falling down, and the powers that are in heaven, shall be moved."

Luke 21:25-26
"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves; Men withering away for fear, and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world. For the powers of heaven shall be moved."

Christ then repeated that He will return in the clouds of heaven, with the angels, amid great glory:

Matthew 24:30-31
"And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all tribes of the earth mourn: and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with much power and majesty. And he shall send his angels with a trumpet, and a great voice: and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the farthest parts of the heavens to the utmost bounds of them."

Parallel passages:

Mark 13:26
"And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds, with great power and glory."

Luke 21:27
"And then they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with great power and majesty."

6. During His trial, Jesus told the high priest that He is the Son of God, and that He will return "coming in the clouds of heaven." When they heard this statement, the Sanhedrin at once sentenced Jesus to death.

Matthew 26:63-64
And the high priest said to him: "I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Christ the Son of God." Jesus saith to him: "Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven."

Parallel passages:

Mark 14:61-62
But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said to him: "Art thou the Christ the Son of the blessed God?" And Jesus said to him: "I am. And you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming with the clouds of heaven."

Luke 22: 66-70
And as soon as it was day, the ancients of the people, and the chief priests and scribes, came together; and they brought him into their council, saying: "If thou be the Christ, tell us." And he saith to them: "If I shall tell you, you will not believe me. And if I shall also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. But hereafter the Son of man shall be sitting on the right hand of the power of God." Then said they all: "Art thou then the Son of God?" Who said: "You say that I am."

7. Immediately after the Ascension of Jesus, angels told the disciples who had witnessed it, that Jesus would return in the same manner as he had been taken up:

Acts 1:9-11
And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they were beholding him going up to heaven, behold two men stood by them in white garments. Who also said: "Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come, as you have seen him going into heaven."

8. In his Epistles, St. Paul said that Jesus would come on the clouds with angels, shaking the heavens and the earth. St. John, in the book of Revelation, said the same.

2 Thessalonians 1:7-10
And to you who are troubled, rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, with the angels of his power: In a flame of fire, giving vengeance to them who know not God, and who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who shall suffer eternal punishment in destruction, from the face of the Lord, and from the glory of his power: When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be made wonderful in all them who have believed; because our testimony was believed upon you in that day.

Hebrews 12:25-27
See that you refuse him not that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spoke upon the earth, much more shall not we, that turn away from him that speaketh to us from heaven. Whose voice then moved the earth; but now he promiseth, saying: "Yet once more, and I will move not only the earth, but heaven also." And in that he saith, "Yet once more," he signifieth the translation of the moveable things as made, that those things may remain which are immoveable.

Revelation 1:7
Behold, he cometh with the clouds, and every eye shall see him, and they also that pierced him. And all the tribes of the earth shall bewail themselves because of him. Even so. Amen.

Revelation 19:11-16
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true, and with justice doth he judge and fight. And his eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many diadems, and he had a name written, which no man knoweth but himself. And he was clothed with a garment sprinkled with blood; and his name is called, THE WORD OF GOD. And the armies that are in heaven followed him on white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth proceedeth a sharp two edged sword; that with it he may strike the nations. And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God the Almighty. And he hath on his garment, and on his thigh written: KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
