Adeodatus II : 672-676 A.D.

77. Born in Rome. Elected April 11,672 - died July 17, 676.

With the help of his Missionaries, he succeeded in converting the Maronites, a strong people with an Armenian-Syrian origin. He was the first to pronounce the words. "Greetings and Apostolic Blessing" during the lectures. He was the first Pope to sign his letters and acts during the years of his pontificate.

He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted 2 years and 6 months.


Donus : 676-678 A.D.

78. Born in Rome. Elected November 2, 676 - died April 2, 678.

During his pontificate, he put an end to the Schism of the Ravenna church. He encouraged the bishops to foster the diffusion of the schools in Trier, in the Germanic Gaul and in Cambridge in England. He ordered that the atrium of the St. Peter Basilica, which was later given the Heaven, be sumptuously paved with different marbles.

He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted 1 year and 5 months.


St. Agatho : 678-681 A.D.

79. Born in Palermo. Elected June 27, 678 - died January 10, 681

He kept in touch with English bishops and fostered the development of Ireland into a cultural center. He called the Sixth Ecumenical Council. He was defined a Thaumaturg, given his numerous miracles.

Contrary to the habit of his predecessors, Agatho looked after the safe of the Roman Church personally.

According to an improbable tradition, Agatho was supposedly 103 years old at the moment of his election; he apparently died four years later, rather than two, when he was 107.

He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted 2 years and 6 months.


St. Leo II : 682-683 A.D.

80. Born in Sicily. Elected August 17, 682 - died July 3, 683.

He sumptuously celebrated religious services in order to make the faithful even more aware of the majesty of the Lord and introduced the aspersion of holy water on the faithful during Christian rites. Since he was very keen to music, he could reform the singing of the liturgy and the concert of sacred hymns. He introduced the kiss of peace to the Mass.

He is buried in St. Peter's church in the Cappella della Colonna. His pontificate lasted only 10 months and a half.
