PART 4 [New Testament]
Matthew 12:14-21
But the Pharisees went out and took
counsel against him, how to destroy him. Jesus, aware of this, withdrew
from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all, and ordered
them not to make him known. This was to fulfil what was spoken by the
prophet Isaiah: "Behold, my servant
whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I
will put my Spirit upon him, and he shall proclaim justice to the
Gentiles. He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will any one hear his
voice in the streets; he will not break a bruised reed or quench a
smoldering wick, till he brings justice to victory; and in his name
will the Gentiles hope."
Mark 9:14-29
And when they came to the disciples,
they saw a great crowd about them, and scribes arguing with them. And
immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and
ran up to him and greeted him. And he asked them, "What are you discussing with them?"
And one of the crowd answered him, "Teacher,
I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it
seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and
becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were
not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to
be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me."
And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him,
immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled
about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he
said, "From childhood. And it has
often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if
you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus
said to him, "If you can! All things
are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the
child cried out and said, "I
believe; help my unbelief!"
And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the
unclean spirit, saying to it, "You
dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter
him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it
came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by
the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the
house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And
he said to them, "This kind cannot
be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting."
Luke 9:37-43
On the next day, when they had come
down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. And behold, a man from
the crowd cried, "Teacher, I beg you
to look upon my son, for he is my only child; and behold, a spirit
seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him till he foams,
and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. And I begged your
disciples to cast it out, but they could not."
Jesus answered, "O faithless and
perverse generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you?
Bring your son here." While he was coming, the demon tore him
and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the
boy, and gave him back to his father. And all were astonished at the
majesty of God.
Let us pray...
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us
in the day of battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and
snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou,
Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, by the Power of God, thrust into Hell
satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the
ruin of souls. AMEN!
